WILDERNESS LODGES NAMED ONE OF NEW ZEALAND'S TOP FIVE WILDLIFE DESTINATIONS — 29/03/12
Dutch newspaper 'De Telegraaf' recently featured the Wilderness Lodges at Arthur's Pass and Lake Moeraki among their top places for seeing New Zealand wildlife because of their unique locations and the huge variety of wildlife on offer.

Wandering along Highway Six a Tawaki pengiun was in danger of being hit by traffic until being rescued by the team at Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki with the help of their guests.

With the return of long warm summer days, the manuka shrublands around Wilderness Lodge Arthur’s Pass are once again humming with busy honeybees. Every summer the manuka, with its delicate white flowers, turns the hillsides into a sea of white and provides a fantastic food source for bees.

British wildlife photographer and zoologist, Mark Carwardine recently visited the Wilderness Lodges on his most recent mission to photograph New Zealand’s special wildlife. Mark main focus at Arthur’s Pass was to find kea parrots and at Lake Moeraki to see the Tawaki penguins.

A TAWAKI PENGUIN STORY ON THE MOERAKI SEACOAST — 2/10/11
Tawaki, the Fiordland Crested Penguin breeds only in the south west corner of the South Island. They breed in jungle-like coastal rainforest beneath tree trunks and in jumbled rocks, overhangs and caves. Breeding sites are found from the Paringa River in South Westland south to Stewart Island. Their total population is estimated to be in the order of 2,500 pairs. They are recognised as the second rarest of the worlds 17 penguin species behind the Galapagos penguin that numbers only an estimated 1,500 pairs. There are 3,000-3,500 pairs of Hoiho, the yellow eyed penguin.
