Daily Complimentary Short Guided Nature Activities (included in Tariff) -  

 

Every day, our naturalist guides offer two guided activities. These are each about an hour long and are included in the Lodge tariff. 

  • The Interior of the Rainforest - A Step Back in Time … a journey of discovery into ancient rainforests filled with towering trees dating back 100 million years to the land of Gondwana.
     
  • Freshwater Ecology of the Moeraki River … learn about the abundance of aquatic life living in the river and hand feed our friendly giant eels.
     
  • Easy Kayaking on Tranquil Lake Moeraki … explore the lake and search for waterbirds from our safe, stable kayaks and canoes.
     
  • Historic Moeraki … learn about the rich history of the Moeraki Valley and South Westland. Hear the stories of the early Maori inhabitants, European sealers and the early days of the Haast Highway.
     
  • Glowworms, Morepork Owls, Freshwater Crayfish and the Stars of the Southern Sky … an easy after dinner night walk.

 

Walks Network

 

Allows you to explore the tracks at your own leisure - On your own or with a group explore  the Lodge walk's network covering 10km (6 miles) or take one of our safe, stable canoes up to explore the lake.

  • Lakeside Walk is an easy 20 minute return forest walk to the outlet of Lake Moeraki with great mountain views
  • Giant Rimu Walk winds down the Moeraki Valley above rapids to giant rimu trees and a lovely Lodge lookout and continues to the Moeraki lagoon
  • Monro Beach Walk is an 80 minute return walk through ancient rainforest to wild and beautiful Tasman sea where large penguins can between August to December
  • Canoes (and lifejackets) are provided for guests' use on the lake, not downriver at any time during your stay. You can canoe right around scenic Lake Moeraki.

Most of our walks have self guided notes that you can take with you, so even without a guide you can learn about the area.
