Founded in 1923 its objectives are "to preserve and protect the indigenous flora and fauna and natural features and landscapes of New Zealand for their intrinsic worth and for the benefit of all people".

It operates campaigns on current conservation issues through out New Zealand and each year conducts an annual appeal to raise funds and awareness.

Forest and Bird is a member of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) and the New Zealand partner of Birdlife International.

The Kiwi Conservation Club (KCC) is a special Forest and Bird project just for children. Individual children, families, groups and schools can all join the Kiwi Conservation Club.
